According to a report prepared by Jayne Fingerman Johnson, Timothy Downing and Kristen C. Nelson from the Department of Forest Resources at the University of Minnesota that examined the Ham Lake wildfire experience with the sprinkler systems as one component of wildfire preparedness, demonstrated that the systems, when properly installed and maintained, can be extremely effective in protecting not only the built structures but also the trees and vegetation within the sprinkler area.

It’s important to note that the Ham Lake wildfire was a fast, wind-driven, early spring fire that exhibited extreme fire behavior at various levels of intensity: low to moderate, and several areas of high intensity. With the possible exception of one structure that burned that may have had an active sprinkler system, no structure with a functional sprinkler system was lost to the Ham Lake wildfire. This was true regardless of fire behavior, intensity, surrounding  fuels, or wind.

It’s no secret that one of the most effective ways to fight fires, if not the most effective, is using water to put out fires and prevent ignitions. That’s why it is important for us to point out that for more than 40 years the external sprinkling system has proven effective and showed success in protecting homes in forest-adjacent communities, in countless wildfires in the USA and Canada. We at ‘Water-Dome’, have taken this successful method and added an important feature to it that makes it even more effective, when dealing with defending communities from wildfires.

The phrase “Think before you act” perfectly describes the process the ‘Water-Dome’ system undergoes, until it evolves into a fully operational system, ready to respond to every scenario.

The process begins with assessing the dangers due to forest fires.

  • Surveying the comprehensive dangers surrounding the community, taking into account the “flammable substances” (such as vegetation), land topography, statistical analysis of the wind regimes and air humidity that are typical to the area surrounding the community, together with their history of fire incidents.
  • Following analysis of the collected data, various threat-scenarios are outlined.
  • In each scenario, the community is divided into separate zones, reflecting their risk levels.

The second stage focuses on the initial system planning, including:

  • Placement of the ‘Water-Dome’ sprinklers, needed for protection.
  • Defining the preferences of each sprinkler, according to the risk level of various scenarios.

During the third stage, a modeling of the water network is conducted, including:

  • Surveying the community’s water network
  • Obtaining the water network infrastructure plan
  • Constructing a model of the water network
  • Optimizing the water distribution to the sprinklers according to time slots, enabling the water pressure to be sufficient and as close as possible to each sprinkler.
  • Verifying the model through experimentation, using portable sprinklers.
  • Adapting the model according to the results of the experiment.

The fourth stage is the “Confirmation Stage” – verifying that the water network can uphold the system’s requirements.

Only upon completion of these four crucial stages, do we begin to approach customers:

  • Presenting an initial offer
  • If relevant, planning and a price quote for each property.
  • Signing an agreement
  • System Installation (1-2 days)
  • Training the operation team in the community
  • System testing in cooperation with the fire department.

From this point, the system is fully operational and ready to go.

Recently, people have been interested in our system, asking us mainly this question: “What does ‘Water-Dome’ actually do?” To answer this, we have composed a step-by-step description on how our innovative system operates, in real-time.

During the first stage, referred to as the “Immunity Stage”, the goal is to secure immunity from conflagration, as fast as possible. When fire spreads in the direction of a community, the ‘Water-Dome’ system is activated, and immediately sheds a massive amount of water on all the defensive points programmed into the system, in-synch with the endangered areas, while maximizing the flow rate. During this stage, a large amount of “rain” is showered on the selected locations: at a rate of more than 2 mm an hour, covering the endangered areas, until full immunity and protection is accomplished.

After immunity is achieved, the “Immunity Maintenance” stage begins. During this stage, the water level automatically reduces to the amount necessary for maintaining adequate moisture. This stage depends of course on the specific climate conditions at that time: humidity, winds and temperature.

The third stage, when the fire reaches the properties, is referred to as the “Impact Stage”. At this stage, the preference, in terms of water distribution, is managed through a smart and focused protocol, according to real-time risk levels. Thanks to cloud-based control and supervision, a rapid response becomes possible, responding swiftly to any unforeseen needs. During this stage, a massive amount of water is used to suppress the fire in critical locations, up to 16 gallons of water per hour, an output that exceeds the capacity of two firefighting aircrafts!

Forest fires spread rapidly and generate a large amount of energy, causing air currents and sparks to skip-over buffer zones, which are designed to protect against fire spreading, particularly in forest-adjacent communities. The solution for preventing fire from spreading to communities through the practice of watering, as implemented across the U.S., has been proven to be a significant and effective fire suppression method, reducing risks by 98%, compared with a 33% risk reduction through land clearing.

There are some who believe that independent use of watering is the solution. The problem with this type of action, when implemented in an uncoordinated manner, results in a drastic decrease of the water pressure serving the entire community, forcing fire fighters to shut down the water supply to homes.

In addition, manual watering is not possible when thick smoke is heading towards the community or when residents are evacuated from their homes.  Until now, a viable solution that offers complete protection to homes is not available.

We are proud to present to you ‘Water-Dome’: an innovative system for protecting properties against forest fires. This system provides a massive sprinkling of water, sheltering both the home and its nearby surroundings, before and during fire advancement.

The unique advantage of this system is its ability to maintain a vital level of water pressure, benefiting the entire community, by controlling the amount of water directed to each property, due to an innovative collaborative function. This collaborative control function distributes the water throughout the community in a smart and fully automated procedure.

‘Water-Dome’ is the only current solution that can respond to needs of both the individual home and the community.

Do you live in a forested area and want to protect your home against forest fires?
